Would it be easy to pull the weeds out of your heart?
Anyways, there I was yesterday – just talking to my dog Beans and I started to pull some of the weeds growing in our small area around the house.
Pulling the weeds made me smile at the thought that was running through my mind. There were weeds that were a lot easier to be pulled and offered little resistance. But there were weeds that needed to be grappled with and have some elbow-grease applied on it before it would give way.
It was like a very quiet revelation. I got the message.
Weeds are like anything that grows from our lives. In some ways – they could be beautiful – but un-controlled, they can become ugly and can destroy the whole garden and other plants around.
In a lot of ways – the things that take place in our hearts are like weeds. There are things in our lives that are made beautiful by what these weeds represent in our lives. Too much though could also mean that they can suffocate other areas in our lives.
It could be your accomplishments, hobbies, passions, material wealth or things like anger, sadness, pride…
As long as there is soil – you can be sure for weeds to grow. Unless you change the molecular structure of the soil so that the weeds won’t grow – unless you change the molecular structure of your heart so that these things (anger, pride etc) won’t grow…
As I was pulling out the weeds it became very easy to realize that the ease by which a weed can be pulled out is dependent on the soil itself.
Dry soil would mean the roots are stuck – and pulling the weeds out would mean the bulbs are left underneath. But when the soil is soft and has good moisture content – it is easy for the weeds to be pulled out.
And so it is the same with our hearts. Unwanted things can be easily pulled out when our hearts are soft. The soil is not ruptured so much when it is easy for the weeds to be pulled out. But try when the soil is really dry – when you yank the weed out – there is usually a wide gaping hole left on the surface of the soil.
How is your heart? Is it getting dried-up or is your heart well-moistened by God’s love?
A heart-check is what we need from time to time.
